Spiritual Direction

It's probably safe to assume that at one time or another most of us have asked the question, "What is life all about? Is there a meaning or is it meaningless?" As we travel through time and space, we develop a philosophy of life. No matter how limited or inaccurate our world view is, it becomes our belief. And our beliefs inform how we function and operate. To be or not to be, that is the question. —Shakespeare

Spiritual growth demands that we silence the familiar and seek the threatening and unfamiliar. There is very little good in a hand me down religion. We must develop a personal God of our understanding from our own personal experiences and not from the experiences of others. We must challenge what we have been taught and hold dear. The path to Holiness lies in questioning everything.

We must believe that God wants us to grow. We must believe that God loves us. To many this belief seems naive. This simple belief is not an easy philosophy to live by. We must ask why God wants us to grow. What are we growing towards? What is the goal of evolution? The most revelatory answer is God wants us to become God. Like Him but not Him.

We are created in God's image and are destined to share in divine life by living in the present moment, being our authentic selves. But, we find ourselves exiled from both God and our deepest self. Our heart calls us to return to the source of all reality who establishes our true identity and becomes the goal of our life's journey.

Your Spiritual Director at New Horizons Personal Management will facilitate your spiritual growth as you establish your authentic self in God.

First Principle and Foundation

Each of us is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save our soul. The other things on the face of the earth are created to help us attain the end for which we are created. Hence, we are to make use of them inasmuch as they help us in the attainment of our end, and we must rid ourselves of them in so far as they prove a hindrance to us. Therefore, we must not become attached to any created thing, as far as we are allowed free choice and are not under any prohibition. Consequently, as far as we are concerned, we should not prefer health to sickness, riches to poverty, honor to dishonor, a long life to a short life. The same holds for all other things. Our one desire and choice should be what is more conducive to the end for which we are created.

Tao in Spiritual Direction

The Tao teaches a vision of life as process, emerging patterns of harmony and cooperation. Because through it we may find inner peace, leaving the world behind as we embrace divine poverty, accomplishing great things by small actions.

Mythology in Spiritual Direction

Millions of people have come to appreciate the power and relevance of mythology in modern life. Each of us lives a personal mythology, an inner drama whose plot we enact over and over in our daily lives. It determines how we think and feel, and even what we do. Understanding your mythology can be a powerful tool for growth and transformation.

St. Ignatius Loyola

Suspice
St. Ignatius Loyola

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding and my entire will all I have and call my own.

You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me.

Prayer for Generosity
St. Ignatius Loyola

Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I do your will.

Zen

Before a person studies Zen mountains are mountains and waters are waters. After a first glimpse into the truth of Zen mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters. After enlightenment mountains are once again mountains and waters once again waters.
